Installation and Performance Art

This studio course explores two, interrelated contemporary modes of sculptural practice: performance art and installation. Consideration is given to the range of artistic expression found within these fields, as well as the different cultural and historical contexts within which the works are situated. Students complete four projects over the course of the semester. One of these must be a performance and one must be an installation (in the more narrowly defined understanding of the terms). The two remaining projects can be either (or both). These projects are informed by a great deal of research and are supplemented with papers, readings, and in-class discussions.
